When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, Roosevelt volunteered as commander of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, known as the Rough Riders, lead a risky attack on San Juan Hill. Returning a war hero, Roosevelt became the governor of New York. He was a very influential man and began to make changes. In an attempt to limit his power and prevent him from continuing his changes, he was placed as William McKinley's Vice President. Roosevelt was not Vice President very long however because McKinley was assassinated in 1901, making him next in line for President of the United States.
In the 1904 election, Roosevelt was determined to become President by actually winning an election. To achieve this he needed to win over the support of the members of his party, the Republican Party. He won the support of wealthy capitalists who feared his progressive approach but feared a Democratic victory even more. He won the election in a landslide. He became the first President to be elected after taking office because of death to his superior.
